What I took away from MIT’s Deploying AI for Strategic Impact program

There is no shortage of AI excitement right now. New model releases arrive almost weekly. Capabilities improve at breathtaking speed. Demos are seductive. And yet, from a business-oriented CTO perspective, the real question is not whether AI is impressive. It clearly is. The real question is where it creates meaningful business value, under what conditions, and with what trade-offs. That is where this course helped me most. It gave me a much sharper lens for separating signal from noise.

The first thing the course reinforced for me is that AI is not just another technology wave to be slotted into the existing portfolio. It is much closer to a general purpose technology. That means it will reshape products, processes, operating models, and expectations at the same time. But it also means that the right response is not to do AI everywhere. The right response is to become much more disciplined about where AI can genuinely improve speed, quality, or economics, and where it simply adds complexity, cost, and risk.

One of the most useful ideas in the course was also one of the simplest: economics matters more than exposure. A task may be technically exposed to AI and still not be worth automating. That was an important corrective. In many AI conversations, people jump straight from capability to inevitability. The course made clear that this is lazy thinking. Scale matters. Accuracy requirements matter. Deployment costs matter. Human labour is not replaced just because a model can perform part of a task. It is replaced only when doing so is economically rational and operationally sound. That is a much higher bar.

This leads to a second insight that I find deeply practical: in many cases, partial automation is the smarter answer than full automation. The insurance example used in the course captured this well. Full automation failed because the final stretch of accuracy was too expensive and too risky. Partial automation, where AI prefilled and humans verified, created a far better outcome. It reduced handling time dramatically and still protected quality. For a business-oriented CTO, this is gold. It is a reminder that the best AI solution is often not the most ambitious one. It is the one that redesigns the workflow intelligently.

That point connects directly to something else I took from the course: AI is as much an organisational design challenge as a technical one. The biggest gains do not come from dropping a model into the business and hoping for magic. They come from rethinking the interaction between technology, people, data, governance, and workflow. Human in the loop is not a compromise. In many contexts, it is the design. We saw this in examples from claims handling, translation, condition monitoring, and medical support. The pattern was strikingly consistent. AI created value when it accelerated analysis, drafting, summarising, or pattern recognition, while people retained responsibility for judgement, exception handling, and trust.

A fourth takeaway is that agility matters even more in AI than it does in ordinary software delivery. Not because planning is unimportant, but because long, linear, waterfall-style programmes are too brittle for a technology that is evolving this fast. What stayed with me from the course was the idea of a minimum viable plan. Not chaos. Not random experimentation. But enough structure to identify the most promising use cases, and then rapid cycles of testing, monitoring, learning, and adjusting. That feels exactly right to me. In an AI context, strategy without experimentation becomes theatre, and experimentation without strategy becomes waste. The craft is in combining the two.

The course also sharpened my view on productivity. AI does not improve all work equally. It tends to be strongest on some tasks and weaker on others. It can augment humans powerfully, but not universally. It can help less experienced employees improve faster. It can compress time on drafting, analysis, summarisation, and ideation. But outside the frontier of what it handles well, it can mislead just as efficiently as it can assist. That matters for how we design teams, controls, and training. A CTO should not just ask, “Can this model do the task?” The better question is, “For whom, under what conditions, with what supervision, and with what measurable effect?”

I also appreciated that the course never let the technology drift too far away from responsibility. Hallucinations, bias, privacy concerns, security issues, and overtrust are not side notes. They are deployment realities. In fact, one of the more sobering lessons was that explanation alone does not necessarily make systems safer. It can sometimes make people trust bad advice more readily. That is a powerful reminder that responsible AI is not a matter of adding a reassuring interface on top of a model. It requires governance, evaluation, training, guardrails, and an operating culture that treats AI as consequential.

Finally, the course helped me think more clearly about the role of the CTO in all this. Not as the person who owns AI. And not as the person who merely approves tooling.

But as someone who helps the organisation build the conditions in which AI can create value responsibly. That means investing in data foundations. It means building AI literacy beyond the engineering function. It means creating room for prototyping. It means connecting business priorities to technical experimentation. It means choosing where to build in-house and where to partner. It means being honest about ROI. And it means recognising that the organisations that learn fastest will probably outperform the ones that simply spend the most.

So what have I personally taken from the course?

A more grounded optimism, perhaps, is the best way to frame it.

I am convinced that AI will reshape how products are built, how work gets done, and what leadership requires. But I am also more convinced that value will not come from hype, nor from isolated pilots, nor from bolting a chatbot onto whatever already exists.

It will come from better choices. It will come from leaders asking questions like:

If you work at the intersection of technology, product, and business, I can genuinely recommend the course. It is thoughtful, practical, and much stronger on economics, operating models, experimentation, and responsible deployment than most AI content I have come across.
